Best Season
Summer (October–March) when water temperatures are warm and aquatic vegetation is abundant
The grass carp is a large herbivorous freshwater fish originally from East Asia, introduced to South African waters primarily for aquatic vegetation control. They can grow to impressive sizes and are prized by anglers for their powerful, dogged fights. Grass carp are wary feeders, making them a rewarding challenge.
Habitat
Dams, irrigation canals, and slow-flowing rivers with abundant aquatic vegetation. They prefer warm, shallow waters rich in plant life and are often found grazing in weed beds or along grassy margins.
Best Bait & Lures
- Fresh grass & reed stems
- Bread flake or crust
- Sweet corn (canned or fresh)
- Mulberries & soft fruits
- Floating dog biscuits
Techniques
- Surface fishing with bread crust or grass clippings
- Free-lining near weed beds
- Float fishing with light tackle
- Stalking visible fish in shallow margins
- Patience — grass carp are extremely skittish
Regulations
Check local dam rules — some waters prohibit targeting grass carp as they are stocked for vegetation management. Catch-and-release is standard practice.
Fun Fact
💡 Grass carp can eat up to 40% of their body weight in vegetation per day, making them one of the most effective biological weed control agents in dams.
