Bass
Micropterus salmoides (Largemouth Bass)
The largemouth bass is South Africa's most popular sport fish. Originally introduced from North America, bass have thrived in SA's warm-water dams and impoundments. Known for explosive strikes and aerial acrobatics, they offer exciting catch-and-release fishing year-round.

Carp
Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp)
Carp are the heavyweights of South African freshwater fishing. These powerful, hard-fighting fish can grow to enormous sizes and provide incredible battles on light tackle. Carp fishing has a massive following in SA, with dedicated specimen hunters targeting trophy fish.

Grass Carp
Ctenopharyngodon idella
The grass carp is a large herbivorous freshwater fish originally from East Asia, introduced to South African waters primarily for aquatic vegetation control. They can grow to impressive sizes and are prized by anglers for their powerful, dogged fights. Grass carp are wary feeders, making them a rewarding challenge.

Mud Fish
Labeo umbratus (Moggel)
The mudfish, commonly known as moggel in South Africa, is a bottom-feeding freshwater fish found across the country. While not traditionally a primary target species, mudfish provide great sport on light tackle and are especially popular among bank anglers. They fight hard for their size and are often caught while targeting other species.

Barbel
Clarias gariepinus (Sharptooth Catfish)
The sharptooth catfish, commonly known as barbel, is Africa's most widespread freshwater fish. These powerful predators can grow to massive sizes and put up brutal fights. Night fishing for barbel is a beloved South African tradition.

Yellowfish
Labeobarbus kimberleyensis / L. aeneus
Yellowfish are South Africa's premier indigenous sport fish and a true national treasure. The largemouth (Vaal-Orange) and smallmouth yellowfish are powerful fighters prized for their golden colour and acrobatic leaps. Fly fishing for yellowfish has become iconic.

Kurper
Oreochromis mossambicus (Mozambique Tilapia)
Kurper (tilapia) are one of South Africa's most commonly encountered freshwater fish. While often considered a beginner's fish, large kurper are surprisingly challenging to catch and provide excellent sport on light tackle. They're also important for artlure competitions.
