Kurper (tilapia) are one of South Africa's most commonly encountered freshwater fish. While often considered a beginner's fish, large kurper are surprisingly challenging to catch and provide excellent sport on light tackle. They're also important for artlure competitions.
Habitat
Warm-water dams, pans, vleis, and slow-moving rivers. Kurper thrive in shallow, weedy areas and prefer water above 20°C. They're often found in large schools near structure, beds, and rocky areas.
Best Bait & Lures
- Small soft plastics & grubs
- Bread (floating or paste)
- Earthworms
- Tiny crankbaits & spinners
- Corn & dough balls
Techniques
- Ultra-light tackle & finesse gear
- Float fishing with bread
- Small lure fishing (1–3g jigheads)
- Fly fishing with small nymphs
- Sight fishing in shallow bays
Regulations
Bag limits vary — typically 10 per day. Kurper are classified as indigenous in some regions and invasive in others. Check local regulations.
Fun Fact
💡 Male kurper build circular nests in shallow water and guard their eggs fiercely — during nesting season, they'll attack almost any lure that comes near their territory.
