Best Season
Spring and summer (September–February) when mudfish move into shallows to feed and spawn
The mudfish, commonly known as moggel in South Africa, is a bottom-feeding freshwater fish found across the country. While not traditionally a primary target species, mudfish provide great sport on light tackle and are especially popular among bank anglers. They fight hard for their size and are often caught while targeting other species.
Habitat
Dams, rivers, and vleis throughout South Africa. Mudfish prefer murky, slow-moving water with soft, muddy or sandy bottoms. They are commonly found in shallow bays and near inflows where sediment collects.
Best Bait & Lures
- Earthworms (garden worms)
- Maize (mielies) — cooked or raw
- Bread dough balls
- Soured mealie pap
- Small pieces of cheese
Techniques
- Bottom fishing with a sliding sinker rig
- Light float fishing in shallow bays
- Ground-baiting an area with mealie pap to attract fish
- Patience with a tight line on the bottom
- Ultra-light tackle for maximum sport
Regulations
No specific restrictions in most waters. Always follow local dam rules regarding bag limits. Practice catch-and-release where possible to sustain populations.
Fun Fact
💡 Mudfish get their name from their habit of feeding in muddy, silty areas. They use specialised lips to suck up food from the bottom — much like a vacuum cleaner!
